How to Beat the Winter Blues

Beating the winter blues is an age-old dilemma but it’s only relatively recently that these winter blues have been given a more official name. Seasonal Affective Disorder (or SAD) affects a large number of people during the winter months. It’s directly related to the amount of natural sunlight that’s available and, as this decreases, so the feelings of lethargy and depression can increase in sufferers.
As well as feeling tired and needing to sleep a lot more during the winter, people with SAD often resort to eating sugary snacks in order to try and increase their energy levels. This can actually have an adverse effect as it often results in unwanted weight gain. There are plenty of ways to beat the winter blues and for those who find they suffer the distinctive symptoms of SAD then the purchase of a therapy lamp is advisable. These range in size from pocket lamps to large screens that can be placed in the living room for maximum effect. By using these lamps twice a day for a set amount of time, sufferers can benefit from the boosting power of the lights, which help to alleviate those winter blues.
Diet and exercise also have an important role to play when dealing with Seasonal Affective Disorder. By eating a diet that contains plenty of vitamins, sufferers can give their bodies a natural energy boost. Plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and grains will provide vitamins and energy and should help to combat some of the feelings of fatigue. Regular exercise will also provide energy, as the circulation will improve and a feeling of wellness should return. By combining all these easy treatments, sufferers should really notice an improvement to the condition and be able to control their lives without the constant lethargy that those dull winter months brings.
