<p>Sufferers of SAD will notice that their symptoms are directly related to the changing seasons. They will experience the symptoms at the same time each year and this is linked to the onset of the long winter months. As the availability of natural sunlight diminishes during the winter, so the symptoms of SAD will appear and become more noticeable. Sufferers of SAD can experience a wide range of symptoms and some will be affected to a far greater extent than others. <p>Symptoms can be mild and most people will experience feelings of tiredness and lethargy. However, the condition can have a greater impact on some people, with depression being a very real issue. Sufferers often also have a craving for sweet, sugary foods and carbohydrates. This is the body’s way of trying to get a quick energy fix. However, this can often lead to weight gain, which in turn will exacerbate the feelings of depression.</p>

The less light, the more likely a sufferer is to experience the symptoms of SAD. In the past it was difficult to diagnose the condition as less was known about it. However, with so much more information available to us these days, it’s possible to get a prompt diagnosis and begin addressing the issues.</p>
<p>There are some general misconceptions when it comes to understanding SAD. Many people assume that those living in colder regions or countries are more prone to the condition. Although this can be true to a certain extent, living in a warmer area certainly doesn’t make you immune to the effects of SAD. Even in warmer areas, there might be good quality natural light available throughout the day. It is this prolonged absence of light that can bring on feelings of listlessness and depression and, in some ways, it’s even more important to be aware of the possibility of suffering from SAD if you live in a warmer area.
